There’s nothing quite like a fresh bouquet—until it starts drooping sooner than expected. The good news is that a few simple habits can significantly extend the life of your flowers and keep them looking vibrant for days (sometimes even weeks) longer.
Start with a Clean Vase
One of the biggest mistakes people make is using a vase that hasn’t been properly cleaned. Bacteria is the enemy of fresh flowers. Wash your vase with warm soapy water before use to eliminate any residue that could shorten the life of your blooms.
Trim the Stems Correctly
Before placing flowers in water, cut about 1–2 inches off the stems at a 45-degree angle. This increases the surface area for water absorption. Re-trim every couple of days to keep them drinking efficiently.
Remove Leaves Below the Waterline
Any leaves sitting in water will rot quickly and promote bacterial growth. Strip away anything that would be submerged so your flowers stay cleaner and fresher longer.
Change the Water Regularly
Fresh water is essential. Replace it every 1–2 days, and give the vase a quick rinse each time. If your flowers came with a packet of flower food, add it during the first fill—or mix a small homemade solution if needed.
Keep Them Cool and Out of Direct Sunlight
Flowers don’t love heat or direct sun. Place your arrangement in a cool spot away from windows, heaters, and ripening fruit (which releases ethylene gas that speeds up wilting).
Bonus Tip: Mist Lightly
Some flowers appreciate a light misting, especially in dry environments. Just don’t overdo it—too much moisture on petals can encourage decay.
With just a little attention, your bouquet can stay bright, beautiful, and full of life far longer than you might expect.
